Title: Jealousy Only Ends in Pain. Pairing: Travis/Sonny, Matt/Sonny (FFTL) Summary: My reason for Sonny quitting the band standalone, no Manning actually. I left him out for reasons I do not know…but it wasn’t purposely. I edited this all myself I apologize if I missed something. Disclaimer: not mine, nor will FFTL and Sonny every belong to me…but if they did (oh the possibilities) Rating: PG-13 (just to be safe really…) <lj-cut> The weekend had been a long and tedious one, but for Sonny it brought him to the hardest decision he had to make. The previous weeks had been quite rough and tensions were running high. Lately he had felt as if things were spiraling out of control especially when it came to his relationship with Travis. When they first got together everything seemed to be perfect, but now a few months later everything seems to have changed. Sonny blames the stress of working on a third album that has seem to driven these two apart. However even that didn’t seem to satisfy Sonny as weeks went on. Soon he began to blame himself for the widening gap between him and Travis. Everywhere he looked he saw imperfections in himself even if they truly didn’t exist. However it had more to do with Travis then Sonny or the band. Sonny glanced at a recent picture of him and Travis silently wondering what had driven the two apart. Maybe it was him, but something seemed elusive in his mind. Travis had recently been staying out at all hours of the night doing who knows what. This consistency forced Sonny to question himself over and over. It was only a matter of time before Sonny cracked under the pressure. Tears slowly fell with the finality of the decision he knew he needed to make. He hated to leave Derek and Matt, but he couldn’t stay here with Travis. It wasn’t working as much as he hated to admit it. “I’m sorry” he murmured he glanced looking at a picture of his friends. Now with his recent vocal problems everything just seemed to get worse. “Sorry for what?” a familiar voice sounded from the doorway. Sonny turned to see Matt standing there a curious look on his face. His face soon changed when he saw the tears on Sonny’s face. “No reason, I was thinking about something I was reading early. I didn’t expect to think aloud again.” Sonny replied attempting to hide his discomfort from Matt. Not that he could fool him, Matt knew him all to well for this to work. “Stop,” Matt approached the pint sized singer placing a large hand on his shoulder, “I know you’re lying. Besides you can tell me anything.” Matt sighed, knowing Sonny wouldn’t open up, even to him. However something major was affecting him and he had to know what. Sonny however beat him to the punch. “I’m leaving,” he said almost inaudible to Matt despite their close proximity. He did hear it and nearly fainted from shock. Never in a million years would he expect Sonny to leave with no explanation. However Matt didn’t need one, he already knew. Travis was the reason. His consistent infidelity had finally driven Sonny over the edge despite Sonny’s attempts to blame himself. “It was Travis, wasn’t it?” Matt demanded pulling the smaller man into a hug,” Sonny just fell into his arms with a sob. Matt didn’t say anything more, just holding his friend as a way to comfort him. Matt knew this day would come, but he didn’t say anything. Sonny had been happy so Matt just let his knowledge slip by. Travis wasn’t one to just pick one person and stay with them; rather he preferred to get around. “I ended it” Sonny murmured into Matt’s shirt. He fell silent refusing to continue with any detail. Matt didn’t need any; the proof was there for him to see. If he hurt you,” Matt threatened angered that anyone could hurt his Sonny. Wait my Sonny? Since when is he mine? Matt shrugged those thoughts off however, instead choosing to focus on the victim at hand. Sonny had since left his arms to continue packing what belongings he had left. When he’d finished he turned to Matt with an apologetic look. “I’m sorry, but I can’t deal with Travis,” He spoke gently; “I have to leave; besides you’ve always been the better singer.” He glanced at Matt’s face with regret. He hated to do this to him, but he had to help himself. It was then he realized just how much he would miss Matt. This was going to be harder for Sonny then he had originally realized. “No, I understand,” Matt lied pretending to understand. He wanted Sonny to stay, but if he wanted to leave so be it. “All I ask, “He begged staring at his friend with worry “is for you to call me. Don’t leave me hanging here without knowing how you are doing.” You see Matt had been harboring some feelings for the pint sized singer for awhile. He had planned to tell him, but that is when Sonny and Travis hooked up so the feelings had laid on the backburner for some time now. “Why?” Sonny asked cautiously. Matt may be his best friend who happens to be amazingly awesome, but this surprised him. He didn’t expect anyone to want him to talk with much less stay in contact with them after leaving the band. The damage had been done. The hurt flashed painfully in Sonny’s eyes. Anger seethed through Matt’s veins. He had once though Travis to be his best friend, but this just brought anything he once thought to pieces. Matt quickly left Sonny to his packing opting to find the elusive bastard and take care of some unfinished business. “Travis, you sick bastard,” Matt growled truly angry at his supposed friend. Travis turned to his friend in shock. He was steaming with anger and poor Travis didn’t understand why. After all he believed Sonny would never tell what had happened between the two. Travis also didn’t expect for Matt or Derek to even figure out the truth on their own. “What the fuck, man?” Travis scrambled out of Matt’s grasp. He stumbled backwards into Derek knocking them down to the ground. “You hurt Sonny,” Matt glared as if Travis was supposed to know what he was talking about. “What, how?” realization slowly occurred to Travis his face darkening, “Sonny that little asshole I told him not to say anything.” He got up to hunt down the singer only to be stopped by Matt and Derek. Derek may not have been in on why Matt was angry, but he too slowly figured out the truth. Sonny need not say anything, when Travis basically admitted to hurting the singer on his own. “Sonny didn’t say anything, I figured out it out myself,” Matt growled, “Tell me something Travis, Did you have to hurt him like that? Don’t say it was the alcohol, that’s just bullshit.” Travis didn’t answer, hanging his head in shame. He knew that if he didn’t play such a vital role in the band he would be a goner. The friendship and trust he once had walked out the day he hit Sonny. He couldn’t explain for sure why he did it, but maybe it was the jealously. Matt and Sonny had been good friends from the beginning and Travis didn’t have that. Derek had noticed the tension between the three, but never in a million years would he expect to see it all come down to this. Jealously seems to have driven the band apart for the time being or even permanently. “For some time now, “Travis spoke up, “Sonny and I have been drifting apart. He never really loved me more then a crush. I’m not the one he wants, but I was the one he turned to because he doubted himself.” Matt looked at him in disbelief. “What do you mean?” He asked curiously. “I mean that Sonny loves someone else, and I was jealous,” Travis sighed in defeat, “I love him, but the feelings are not mutual. I got jealous and turned to alcohol. Travis hung his head in shame. He couldn’t even forgive himself if he tried. The band had lost a member due to his stupidity and jealously. He knew this day would come when he and Sonny hooked up. Sonny loved Matt and he could see that from the beginning, but he chose to go along with Sonny despite knowing someone or the band could be harmed in the end. “This just keeps getting better and better,” Derek mumbled, “so you caused Sonny to leave, but you never told us who the other guy involved is.” Matt stood there listening slowly putting the pieces together. It all seemed to make sense. He and Sonny hit it off when they first met and something about the petit singer amazed him. He was fascinated with him to the point of almost obsession. “The guy,” Matt stuttered, “is me isn’t it?” Travis simply nodded in response. “Yes, Sonny loves you Matt,” Travis spoke with remorse, “and you love him, I was just an idiot who got in the way. I knew he loved you but I couldn’t let you have him. For that I am sorry and as for the band I suppose it is too late.” Then what could only be Sonny came shuffling down the stairs. He apparently had been listening the entire time when he finally spoke up. “Matt, if you sing then the band will be ok,” he whispered, “maybe it’s good for us all; besides Matt we’ll keep in touch. I’d like to try a solo career anyone.” Matt walked over to where sonny was standing. He pulled the singer close to him assuring him everything will be ok. “Before you leave, I have to tell you something,” Matt whispered as Derek and Travis left the two men to talk. The singer gazed into Matt’s blue eyes waiting for him to continue. For Matt this would be a long time coming. His feelings for Sonny had always been there, but when Travis entered the picture he’d somehow repressed them for the time being. Now he had to muster the courage to admit what had been repressed for so long. He didn’t have much time, so it was now or never. “Sonny,” Matt went on a small smile on his face, “I know you probably won’t believe me or some shit like that. However before you leave, I just want you to know that I’ll always be here. I care, no I love you Sonny.” Matt let out a small sigh of relief when he finished. Now it was up to Sonny for a response. Matt quickly braced himself for the coming rejection he knew was coming. Well if anything it would be an ‘I’m not ready’ situation. Matt could deal with that no thanks to Travis. Sonny glanced up at Matt unsure of what to say. Somewhere inside his mind told him to say ‘I can’t Matt’, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. Matt was different then Travis, he knew that, but after all the pain he’d gone through another relationship was out of the question. “Matt, I don’t know what to say,” Sonny replied honestly, “As I do feel the same way, but it wouldn’t be fair for me to use you as a rebound.” Matt nodded telling Sonny he would wait for him. He didn’t care how long it took if it meant he’d get to have Sonny to love and to cherish. “Go,” Matt encouraged,” I’ll be fine, the band will be ok eventually. Chase your dreams and remember I’ll be here waiting for you.” Sonny didn’t need to be told twice as he hugged Matt one last time until they met again. Tears fell down his face, but this time they were happy ones as Sonny took his bags and left the house. The next few months would be challenging both for Sonny and the remaining members of FFTL. Matt smiled to himself as he watched Sonny leave. Sure it meant the band was split, but maybe it was for the best. Be safe, Sonny. I love you Matt thought to himself as he shut the door with a sad smile. A/N: Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve written anything. As for the one story I have on hiatus I have no idea where it’s going since it’s been awhile, but perhaps I will return to it. Anyways, this little one shot has broken my writers block at last. It came to me when I read the sad news on www.altpress.com that Sonny left the band. Comments and constructive criticism would be nice (no flames.). I did beta this myself so if I missed anything, I apologize. Inform me, and I will fix them
